Supervision

SLPAs must practice under the supervision of a licensed Speech-Language Pathologist at all times. The level and frequency of supervision are determined by the supervising SLP based on their evaluation of the SLPA’s clinical competence. There are two primary forms of supervision:

  1. Direct Supervision: The SLP is physically present or observes remotely during therapy sessions conducted by the SLPA for every student on the caseload. The SLP may adjust the frequency of direct supervision if the SLPA demonstrates appropriate competence in providing services.

  2. Indirect Supervision: The SLP is not required to be present during therapy sessions. Supervision is fulfilled through activities such as reviewing session notes, student records, or consultations.

Supervision requirements can vary by state; however, the standard expectations are as follows:

For the first 90 days of practice the SLPA is are required to have:

  • 20% direct supervision per week
  • 10% indirect supervision per week

After the initial 90 days, the expectation is:

  • 10% direct supervision
  • 10% indirect supervision
